Looking south from the beach at Pratt Avenue.
The little chunks of ice were floating past this gap in the sheet.
Ice stretching into the distance.
The camera picked up a lot more color than what I was seeing, making the ice look like an alien landscape.
A closeup of the ice from the prior photo.
The frozenof surf ice was probably 4 feet tall in sections.
The sound of the small waves was very odd, probably due to the amount of slush in the water.
Don't go swimming here!
This color in this photo is from pulling the range out too far, but I thought that it made for a really interesting texture. There does appear to be some real opalescence though.
Ice tendrils!
A piece of ice breaking off into Lake Michigan.
I went out a couple of nights ago to the beach and discovered that the ice was stretching all the way to the horizon. It was also incredibly fractured looking, so I got up early the next morning and took some shots. Unfortunately there wasn't any sun out to make things sparkle.
Do Not Dive: Unless you want to die a death of a thousand icy cuts!
This smashed television had been hauled out and destroyed sometime after 11 pm, since it wasn't there the night before! It appears to be the work of some artistic gang, at least according to the chalk graffiti left behind.
I went back the next morning, since the sun was out. According to a person I met at the beach, this sort of shattered ice occurs every five years or so. It was amazing in the bright sun!
What had been an ice field stretching from horizon to horizon had been reduced to this in the course of a single day,
Ducks!
The icy water picked up some odd colors.
Lake Michigan was very clear, the bottom could be clearly seen even in fairly deep water.
More shattered ice.
An apparent tribute to 'Turn Off Your Television' week
